Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when there is a complete disruption of airflow (apnea) through the nose and mouth during sleep. This disruption is called an apnea due to obstruction at the level of the pharynx. This obstruction can be due to enlarged tonsils, enlarged tongue, increased tissue in that area due to obesity. The most common risk factor is obesity. Why is it bad? This obstruction leads to decreased oxygen, which not only affects your sleep cycles, but also your heart and lungs. Untreated sleep apnea overtime can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, heart failure, and of course daytime sleepiness Signs of OSA include: Daytime sleepiness Loud snoring Gasping when you sleep Apneic episodes usually witnessed by the partner How do you know you have a OSA? Sleep study done either at a sleep center or at home The home study devices are very small and non-cumbersome. To determine if one has OSA is based on the number of apneic events per the duration of sleep. Treatments include CPAP, which is a machine that helps keep your airway open when you sleep. Mouthguard Hypoglossal nerve stimulators that force that tongue forward to prevent obstruction Images used: https://magazine.smhs.gwu.edu/news/gw-rese... https://www.nkch.org/blog/loud-snorers-tak... https://www.medpagetoday.com/resource-cent... #sleepapnea #primarycare #internalmedicine
