Drawbridge Action on Newtown Creek

The Greenpoint Avenue drawbridge connecting Queens to Brooklyn shows a little action as it opens midday on September 16, 2014 to allow a tugboat pulling a pile driving barge access to the East River. The tug yields the right-of-way to a recycling barge being pushed by a second tug, and as the bridge closes, a third, much smaller craft heads under in the opposite direction. Official name for the bridge is the J. J. Byrne Memorial Bridge. The waterway is the infamous Newtown Creek. Traffic seems to wait an interminable time for the bridge to reclose and then pours across the span as street traffic begins to return to its normal snarl. -- Copyright 2014, Christopher Zizzo.
