President Karen S. Haynes became president of CSU San Marcos in February 2004, coming to CSUSM from the University of Houston-Victoria, where she also served as president. During President Haynes’ time at San Marcos, her successes have included elevating the educational attainment rate of the entire region around the campus. Over half of the 2018 graduating class of CSUSM were the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, and 39 percent came from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
