The end of an era, 1874 - 2024. 150 years ago the original Torridge Vale Dairy was conceived by a local green grocer in the small village of Taddiport on the outskirts of Great Torrington in North Devon, the business originally dealt with a small number of local farms which supplied the former dairy with the milk which in turn was pasteurized, bottled and delivered to it's customers. This dairy business grew over the next few years, and the supply of milk brought in originally was in milk churns at the time, progressed into tanker lorries that traveled around an increasing base of farms in the area and brought even more milk to the Torrington dairy to be processed, now the creamery was owned by the farmers and they did other things with the milk, such as produce butter, dried milk powder, UHT and various milk deserts. The spreadable Glover was created and developed as a by product of the surplus milk that was unable to be used at the time. The creamery premises grew and expanded soon everything was done onsite, they had laboratories and warehousing for the various products that were being produced onsite, more and bigger buildings were built as more things could be done with the milk. The business traded under several names and partners and went from Torridge Vale Dairies Ltd, then it was called Cow & Gate in later years, a merger with United Dairies and Cow & Gate formed, Unigate Foods, which evolved into Dairy Crest in later years as a few of the names, the milk tankers were kept and serviced onsite by now and went further afield to an expanding farm business, everything was good until a fire struck the creamery in 1993, which was the final nail in the coffin for that site, it being the most advanced and technological creameries in the southwest at the time with the most modern and up to date machinery and processes. It spent the next 31 years abandoned from that point on, even the two clocks on the over bridge between the two parts of the buildings over the access road stopped at the very time the factory was considered to be no long a viable proposition, and so everyone was either laid off or offered jobs at other sites around the county. The next 31 years the place has been left to fall down and has been in decline and has been a mecca for Graffiti artists and vandals, and the travelling Urban exploration fraternity to explore at various times of the day and night. It has had several concepts of redevelopment hinted at over the many years of it's demise but none have come to fruition until recently in 2023 it made headlines in the national and local news papers that this eyesore of Taddiport was now sold and was destined to be demolished and redeveloped finally into something more useful than an eyesore and blot on the landscape that it had been for over three decades already.
