Fresh from his victory in the final of the Con & Annie Kirby Memorial Puppy Stake at Limerick on Saturday, the Pat Buckley team moved on to Mullingar yesterday and maintained the power show. This time they served up a 1-2 in the final of the Gain Dog Food Irish Cesarewitch and it was again Droopys Roddick’s owner John Proctor celebrating as his Droopys Acrobat caused a 12-1upset in the final when leading home his 1-2 kennel companion Paradise Maverik which was defending his title. When traps opened there was more than a hint of an upset with Maverik missing the kick and he was only fifth on the approach to the bend. But Droopys Acrobat (Tullymurry Act/ Droopys Blossom) had popped out of the three trap and he led up from Mosstown Prince. Here Paradise Maverik displayed his craft as he nosed through a gap on the bend to show third and he went second ahead of Mosstown off the second bend. But Droopys Acrobat was the best part of four lengths in front as they began down the back. Paradise now piled it on and was on the leader’s hind quarters as they hit the third bend while Mosstown Prince had been joined by the flying Droopys Tee in behind. It was hugely exciting run to the line but Droopys Advocat dug deep to hold Paradise Maverik by a length and a half in 33.31 while it was a neck to the fast finishing Droopys Tee in third. The winner is a raw September ’14 whelp – regarded as too young in many quarters for such a trip – and was bred by Sean Dunphy. He also runs in the Proctor colours and he could hardly believe his luck. In the space of about 20 hours his two dogs had earned for him a whopping €89,200 in winning two Irish classics. For Buckley, of course, it was another Cesarewitch victory and also another exciting chapter to what is building into a very promising year.
