In this detailed vlog, we feature the Mammillaria compressa cactus, also known as Mother of Hundreds. This unique cactus is loved worldwide for its clustering habit, heavy pup production, and striking spring flowers in shades of magenta pink. It is one of the most admired ornamental cacti among collectors and gardeners. There are about 150 to 200 species of Mammillaria worldwide. Around 90% of these are native to Mexico, while the rest are distributed in the southwestern parts of the USA such as Texas and Arizona, and in regions of the Caribbean and Venezuela. Mammillaria compressa is specifically native to Mexico. Why is it popular? Because Mammillaria compressa produces so many pups that it forms a tight cluster resembling a cactus colony. This is why it has the interesting common name “Mother of Hundreds.” In spring, the plant covers itself with beautiful pink-magenta flowers, making it a seasonal showpiece in any collection. In this vlog, we also introduce a new propagation tool that makes pup removal very easy. Traditionally, gardeners use cloth to hold pups or forceps/tweezers to pull them, but the new tool ensures safety for both hands and the mother plant. This tool is especially valuable for nurseries and cactus enthusiasts who propagate on a large scale. We also share a tested soil mix formula: – Garden soil for a strong base – Pumice stone for aeration, air pockets, and drainage – Cocopeat for softness during root development (used in small quantity) – Vermi compost as an organic slow-release fertilizer Watering is also explained clearly: water only when the soil is completely dry. In summer once a week is sufficient, while in winter watering once every 15 days is enough. Always ensure quick drainage to prevent root rot. The vlog also demonstrates the difference between plants grown in bright sunlight and shaded areas. Bright sunlight produces stronger and healthier growth, while shaded plants stay weak and pale. During extreme heat above 40°C (104°F), partial shade is recommended to protect the plant. What you will learn in this video: – Introduction and natural habitat of Mammillaria compressa – Sunlight, watering, and seasonal care tips – How to separate pups using cloth, forceps, and the new tool – Potting and soil mix for successful cactus growth – Rock garden examples showing natural habitat growth – Propagation results with rooted pups and future flowering potential This vlog is made for educational purposes so that non-English speakers can also learn cactus care in their own language. English subtitles are included for worldwide viewers.
