[22:41] Maia Bianca № 6 Directed by Luigi Zampa (1905-1991), this Italian drama film stars Francesco D'Adda, Senta Berger, Claudio Nicastro (1913-1977), Enrico Maria Salerno (1926-1994), Gabriele Ferzetti (1925-2015), Gino Pernice (1927-1997), and Luciano Salce (1922-1989). Director Zampa was better known for releasing several Italian Neo-realism films during the 1940's. During the 1950's & 1960's he directed several successful films belonging to the Commedia all'italiana genre. The film is a political picture of sorts which serves as an indictment of the terrible mechanics inside the health-care system, where doctors think of themselves as gods while posing as humanitarians and getting rich on the illnesses of their patients. What is interesting to note is that many of the scenes are based on Italian news stories of the period which recount the suffering and high costs of unnecessary or overly aggressive treatment motivated by academic ambitions or simple greed. It's a world of privileged untouchables, ruled in a strictly hierarchic way. The film was internationally released as 'Hospitals: The White Mafia. Professor Valotti (Gabriele Ferzetti) is an expert in the field of surgery, where patients are selected according to their income. To disguise his greed and obtain fame as a benefactor, he visits a hospital for the poorer community and works for gratis. Among the team of doctors in the clinic is Dr. Giordani (Enrico Maria Salerno), which, in addition to being professionally conscientious, is also honest. Upset by Valotti's last operation (where a patient died in order to cover up a tax investigation), Giordani reports the surgeon to the public prosecutor. Going all out, Valotti, in agreement with the doctors of the clinic, organizes a plot against Giordani, deceiving him in conditions of failing surgery. Faced with the choice of being reported for murder or making a career with the help of Valotti himself, Giordani bows his head: he will withdraw the complaint. But the dishonest surgeon's design is blown away by a serious illness that will force him to retire from the profession and in turn rely on the treacherous hands of some of his colleagues... The beautiful soundtrack comes from Riz Ortolani, which contains the full version from the film, of which only a single was released at the time. This was recorded using elements of the original sessions digitally restored and remastered. Ortolani was among Italy's busiest film composers for almost half a century, working in a wide range of genre films, including Spaghetti westerns, thrillers and erotica, and received many awards and nominations in Europe, including a lifetime achievement award from the World Soundtrack Association in Belgium, 2013.
