Why do you want to push down with your top hand while moving to the catch position? I’ve always avoided talking about anything that is downward in nature during the stroke because whenever you are pushing downward with pressure in the canoe, it translates up your arm and through your body to your feet pushing the canoe down in the water which makes the canoe go slower. As you hinge and drop your arms to the Catch position, you want to press forward and down with the top hand. This pushes your bottom hand forward and down causing your elbow to straighten and your arm to become straight and stiff like a board. When my blade is fully submerged at the catch is when I will apply pressure by pushing with my top shoulder and pulling with my bottom shoulder. If your elbow is not straight at the catch as you apply power, the first thing that happens is that your elbow will straighten which is essentially giving up power during the first part of the stroke. You want that power to be available immediately upon application when you start to push with the top shoulder and pull with the bottom shoulder.
