The White Star Line was founded in 1845 by Thomas Henry Ismay. After a game of billiards with the prominent Liverpool merchant, Gustav Christian Schwabe, and his nephew, Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, the company worked exclusively with Harland and Wolff to build ground-breaking ships - the size that no one had ever seen before. Harland and Wolff built six vessels for the White Star Line, who were so pleased with the quality that they ordered four more from the ship builders. In 1899 Thomas Ismay passed away and his son, J. Bruce Ismay, took control of the company. J Bruce Ismay created some of the company's most famous vessels, including RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic and RMS Britannic. He was chairman of the White Star Line when RMS Titanic hit an iceberg on 14 April 1912, resulting in 1,517 passengers and crew losing their lives. Many years after the tragic disaster, the White Star Line merged with their competitor Cunard Line, as both companies were facing serious financial difficulties. Cunard later acquired all the assets they didn't own, but still raise the White Star flag on all the Cunard vessels to this day.
