I’m Chuck Cantrell; I am a father, a son, a husband, and an Economist. I was born poor and Black in the projects of St. Louis. My family had not yet found a way to escape generational poverty and was once again exposing a new generation to its perils. This was life as it had been for my family for at least four generations, but before that, we were likely slaves and subjected to a completely different but oddly similar set of circumstances. I developed this project for every one of us. Those trapped in what I discovered was an inherently racist economic system and its business cycles. It is for those of us trapped in generational poverty, those that have escaped poverty, to find themselves trapped in new cycles and circumstances that limit their freedom. Black people know these things in an intensely personal way. We live it every day. While we may not have put a name to it, we know the experiences. It took me almost 20 years to put this all together and map the causation of my life experiences; sometimes, patterns are hard to recognize, especially when trapped within them. The data I analyzed told a story I had not yet understood but now has become clear. There are forces in the world buried within our systems that are beyond all of us; these forces impact us without us realizing what’s taking place. We are unwitting victims to systems long ago established and accepted in times less concerned about us as a people. They are structural in nature, created in a time and place that we no longer inhabit as a people. Structures that were born of the racism that was embedded in our culture and accepted as a norm. Structures that we all have realized are wrong and should be dismantled. As you view this work, I want you to keep something in mind: while we are Dying to Stay Here, we are actually serving as canaries. Like the canaries of the coal mines, we are the most vulnerable; therefore, our passing will warn others of problems that will eventually take them, too. I hope this piece gives you pause and compels you to think about what’s happening around us in what feels like slow motion. To think about the impacts on our community and the people within it. I hope that you reflect and think about your role in working to fix these problems before it’s too late.
