Blues dobro and vocals from Abbie Gardner. In her home studio, recording her new song Born in the City, written with Will Kimbrough. Sneak peek of the making of her new record. This was released early for Patrons. **To see more of these kinds of posts check out PATREON: / abbiegardner Here's the song that brought this whole record into focus for me. Some of you know I've have the urge to do a record with vocals and dobro (and nothing else) for a long, long time. Since before I made Wishes on a Neon Sign (my last full length record)! But it took a long time to feel ready for it. It was a dream. I'd make lists of the vibe and kinds of songs I wanted, but couldn't really start until this song came along. I wrote this with Will Kimbrough in the typical Nashville writer-session fashion... It was our first time writing together. If you don't know Will, he is an incredible instrumentalist, writer and singer who backs up Emmylou Harris and writes songs with soldiers recovering from PTSD. (In other words - he's AWESOME!) We met at his house and made small talk while he warmed up some rice & beans for lunch. We talked about what was on our minds and he asked where I grew up, what I liked about it. I grew up in NY in a super diverse area and had been feeling nostalgic for that sort of utopian bubble- the ideal situation where kids are like colors in a crayon box, each one beautiful, unique and from a different background. Racism was something we learned about in books, always grateful it was "over". Now I find I'm always searching for that same feeling, coming together over differences, sharing food, embracing our uniqueness. Anyway, I had this dobro riff I'd been digging, but wasn't sure how to set lyrics to it. Will and I have both listened to a LOT of Ry Cooder, so I think that influenced us as we sat down to write this song. It came out as a mix of Southern style and city sass that I just fell in love with. I walked away from his house knowing that I finally had a song for my DobroSinger record. That the dream was going to be a reality. Starting with this song. Born in the City. *disclaimer* this is probably not the exact take I'll use on the record. I don't video every take and it's hard to know in the moment which one will be THE one. But I love sharing these unique versions for you, made with exactly my setup for making this record.
