According to experts, in ancient times it was home to the inhabitants of the Tujia ethnic group, of the ancient Ba and Chi culture. Now, tourism, fishing, tea cultivation and agriculture have become the main source of income for the locals. Neither the remoteness nor the high temperatures are an impediment for the daily crossing of the Yangtze River by ships full of tourists who seek to marvel at the natural landscapes and enjoy the traditional dances and ceremonies performed in the village. On the less than 30-minute journey, visitors can experience the majesty of the Yangtze River, one of China's largest, and on its banks the traditional "black house," a type of dwelling inhabited by members of the Tujia ethnic group and built on stilts.
