Dr. Timothy Jochen treated this lady patient's mucocele that had been bothering her for awhile. A mucocele is a fluid-filled cyst, and it was located inside of the woman's lips. What is the difference between a mucocele and a cyst?: A mucocele and a cyst are both types of fluid-filled lumps that can occur in the body, but they differ in their location, underlying causes, and characteristics. A mucocele is a type of cyst that forms on the inside of the lip or cheek. It typically develops when a salivary gland duct becomes blocked, causing saliva to accumulate and form a fluid-filled sac. Mucoceles are usually small, painless, and bluish or translucent in color. They can often go away on their own, but if they persist or become uncomfortable, they may need to be removed by a dermatologist or oral surgeon. A cyst, on the other hand, can occur anywhere in the body and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as infections, genetic conditions, or abnormalities in organ development. Unlike mucoceles, cysts are not typically associated with salivary gland blockages, and they can vary in size, location, and symptoms depending on their underlying cause.
