We visited the Mt. Whitney Portal area in late April 2025 to see what spring conditions were like at the gateway to the highest peak in the Lower 48. While the full Mt. Whitney Trail was still snowed in, we were able to hike about a mile up the trail before deep snow and winter conditions forced us to turn back. Even without reaching far up the route, the Portal area was absolutely beautiful—towering granite walls, rushing water, and a real sense of how wild this place still is in early spring. The Mt. Whitney Portal Store was closed during our visit and isn’t scheduled to reopen until mid-May, which is something to keep in mind if you’re planning a trip this time of year.
