🌱 Are you over-fertilizing your garden? 🤔 You might be surprised! We often think more fertilizer = happier plants, but that’s not always the case. The truth is, it’s not just about how many nutrients are in the soil, it’s about whether your plants can actually ACCESS them. 🔓 Plants need a delicate balance of macronutrients (like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) and micronutrients (like iron, zinc, and boron) to thrive. But adding more fertilizer isn’t always the answer. In fact, over-fertilizing can cause serious harm: ⚠️ Nutrient Lockout: Too much of one nutrient can block the uptake of others. For example, excess phosphorus can prevent plants from absorbing zinc, even if it’s right there in the soil! ⚠️ Soil Health Damage: Over-fertilizing can disrupt soil microbiology, harm beneficial organisms, and lead to salt buildup, which damages plant roots. ⚠️ Environmental Impact: Excess nutrients can leach into groundwater or runoff into nearby waterways, causing pollution and algal blooms. So what’s the secret? It’s all about balance and availability! The most important factor influencing nutrient access is SOIL pH. 📊 Most nutrients are best available in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). If your pH is too high or too low, your plants can’t absorb nutrients properly, no matter how much fertilizer you add. Instead of reaching for more fertilizer, try this: 1️⃣ Test your soil! Know your pH and nutrient levels before adding anything. 2️⃣ Focus on soil health: add compost, maintain organic matter, and encourage microbial life. 3️⃣ Use fertilizers wisely and less is often more. Remember: Healthy soil = healthy plants.
