Since 1811 he had acted as Prince Regent, during his father's incapacity from mental illness (see the film: "The Madness of King George"). Renowned for his extravagance and the huge debts that he ran up, not least building The Royal Pavilion in Brighton. The coronation ceremony cost over £9.5m in today's money. The Coronation Day split into 3 parts: 1: The Procession to Westminster Abbey 2: The Coronation Service 3: The Coronation Banquet. The procession was more like a carnival pageant or gigantic cat walk. It was led by Miss Fellowes, the Herbwoman and her 6 attendants. In an ancient tradition they scattered flowers and herbs to ward off pestilence and disease. The procession entered Westminster Abbey to Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus". For 5 hours the 57 year old, obese king had to sit in his velvet costume, with his wig and his crown (which weighed 5 pounds). Poor old George used 19 handkerchiefs to wipe the sweat from his face on that hot summers day! It was now that one of the most farcical (and embarrassing) moments at an English coronation happened. Estranged wife Caroline turned up to be crowned Queen. George was adamant that there was no way she was going to be crowned on his big day…or ever if he had his way. King George had hired 18 professional (bare knuckle) boxers to act as "bouncers" on his big day. These boxers included John "Gentleman" Jackson, former champion of England and Bill Richmond, a former slave from America. With 17 wins from 19 fights, Bill Richmond was probably the very first black sporting superstar in Britain. And they blocked her entry. Humiliated, Caroline had to get back into her carriage and head back to her house. There had been a coronation banquet ever since Richard the Lionheart's coronation in 1194. But in true George IV style this was the biggest and best…it was also to be the last. Over 1200 guests were seated at 47 tables in Westminster Hall. A further 2900 guests watched the proceedings from a raised gallery. For the very last time in British history, the hereditary King's Champion now entered the hall on horseback and fully suited in armour. Throwing down his gauntlet 3 times he challenged anyone who denied the kings right to wear the crown to fight him. George IV lived for another 9 years. Upon his death he was succeeded by his brother, William IV. In 1837, when William died, the young daughter of another deceased brother, came to the throne and her name was Victoria… British tradition meets comedy show! History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens. So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life. Just for the record, I do have a history degree and continue to have a passion for the subject I studied.
