They controlled massive swathes of the continent and fought multiple wars against the British East India Company. By the late 18th Century, however, they were not a nation at the height of their power. Central authority was devolving and their military relied increasingly on foreign mercenaries. Still, one contemporary would describe the Maratha infantry and artillery as "Astonishing" and warn the British of their imposing presence on the battlefield. As the British would soon see, they were not a foe to be underestimated.
