The Kihon Concept is built around the same six uke waza as Hanshi Patrick McCarthy's Taisabaki kata and Taisabaki oyo jutsu, ie. jodan uke, gedan barai, uchi uke, soto uke, kake uke and shuto uke. The main difference is that the two-person drills of the Kihon Concept can be done on different levels depending on the desired outcome and the proficiency of the student. There is also more variation in the HAPV's (Habitual Acts of Physical Violence) addressed, and in the kicks and strikes used as follow-ups. The Kihon Concept allows you to put your karate basics into self-defence context as soon as the gross motor skills are learned. In other words, it's something even a beginner can grasp. Knowing how the basics can be applied, will help to keep the student motivated to build a strong foundation. The basic techniques of the Kihon Concept are familiar to practitioners of most karate styles, which allows for a fun and easy approach to old style karate training. Moving up in the levels of the two-person drills will gradually prepare the student for more complex Koryu Uchinadi drills. My teacher Hanshi Patrick McCarthy likes to use the phrase "Classical tradition - Contemporary insight". This is what the Kihon Concept is all about!
