Let's dive into the fascinating world of this bonsai variety. Why did you choose Portulacaria Afra for bonsai cultivation? What are some of its benefits? Portulacaria Afra, or Dwarf Jade Bonsai, offers several advantages for bonsai enthusiasts. One of its notable benefits is that it can be shaped beautifully using the clip and grow method, which is perfect for individuals who prefer not to wire their trees. Additionally, Jade Bonsai is forgiving and can withstand a wide range of conditions, making it an ideal choice for beginners. What type of bonsai soil do you prefer for Portulacaria Afra, and what makes it perfect? At Wigerts Nursery, we utilize a coarse mix consisting of lava rock, pumice, and expanded slate for our Portulacaria Afra. This combination provides excellent drainage and promotes a healthy root system, which is crucial for the overall well-being of the bonsai. How frequently do you water your Jade Bonsai? Here in South Florida, we water our Jade Bonsai daily, except during the coldest months of winter when we adjust the watering schedule accordingly. Which fertilizer do you use, and how often do you apply it? We utilize a high-nitrogen, six-month slow-release fertilizer for our Jade Bonsai. This provides a steady supply of nutrients over an extended period. Trimming is an essential aspect of bonsai care. How often do you trim your Jade Bonsai, and what are the reasons behind it? The frequency of trimming depends on the growth rate and the time of year. Typically, we trim our Jade Bonsai every two to three weeks during the summer months and monthly in winter. Regular trimming helps maintain the desired shape and encourages back budding, resulting in denser foliage. How frequently do you re-pot your Jade Bonsai? We typically re-pot our Jade Bonsai every two to three years. This allows for root health assessment and ensures optimal growth conditions for the bonsai. Have you encountered any pests or issues like Mealie bugs? How do you manage them? Occasionally, we face challenges with pests, including Mealie bugs. To tackle this issue, we utilize Bifenethrin spray, which effectively controls the infestation and safeguards the health of our Dwarf Jade Bonsai. Interviewer: Do you wire your Jade Bonsai? If so, could you provide some tips for wiring them? Yes, I do wire my Jade Bonsai. Wiring is essential to establish a solid structure for long-term development.
