(10 Jul 1998) Spanish/Nat Peru's President, Alberto Fujimori, has hinted he may run for a controversial third term in office, if he has the approval of the Peruvian people. His comments came during an official visit to London. Fujimori has already signed a bilateral action plan with the British government, setting out plans to strengthen co-operation between the two countries. The Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori suggested he will stand for a controversial third term - if he receives enough popular support. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The people of Peru are the ones that decide. (A third term) should not be decided by a minority in Congress. Democracy is based on public opinion. With this I do not want to confirm nor deny if I will be in power in the year 2000." SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Fujimori, Peruvian President Fujimori has faced criticism of his human rights record from the organisation, Amnesty International. During an interview with the Associated Press Television, he admitted there were errors made during his administration's war against rebels. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Mistakes were made, there is no doubt. Mistakes were made first in the 1980's, many of them, and in the beginning of the 90s, also. There have been isolated cases of violations of human rights." SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Fujimori, Peruvian President Fujimori's right hand man, Vladimiro Montesinos, has come under fire from the U-S drug czar, General Barry McCaffrey. Following an official visit to Peru in May, McCaffrey accused the Intelligence Chief of distorting the truth about his visit to the country. The President was keen to play down the comments. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Well, I could not really evaluate but in any case, my government has demonstrated clear advances (in the war against drugs) which have been recognised by the United States government. I think that what Mr. Barry McCaffrey has stated is a personal opinion." SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Fujimori, Peruvian President It has been claimed Peru accounts for half of the world's annual output of cocaine, but the government said it has cut by half the number of hectares of land devoted to coca leaf production over the last two years. The British government has reportedly provided some 250 (m) million pounds (about 410 (m) million U-S dollars) in aid to Peru to help the country fund programmes to switch to other crops. Fujimori also responded to the recent revelations that a gun shipment intercepted by Argentinian authorities had sailed from South Africa - and was destined for Peru. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "This is a regular purchase of arms that any sovereign country can undertake. We have followed all legal transactions, it is not an illegal traffic of arms unlike the flow of weapons from Argentina to Ecuador during our border crisis with the latter. This present purchase of arms is legal and above board and of which we will inform the United Nations in due course, as we always have done." SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Fujimori, Peruvian President Fujimori and British Prime Minister Tony Blair met on Thursday and signed a bilateral action plan setting out how they could strengthen co-operation in economic, commercial and cultural spheres. One of the greatest challenges facing Peru is the devastation caused by the El Nino phenomenon. He referred to the problem when discussing his recent divorce....and his private life.
