In Neckarsulm, Audi has initiated the production of the new Audi A5 family, marking the introduction of the first models based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) with partially electrified drive systems and a new electronic architecture. This move aligns with Audi's commitment to sustainable vehicle production. By 2025, all models manufactured at the Neckarsulm site will be net carbon-neutral, in accordance with the "360factory" production strategy. This ambitious goal will be achieved through more efficient production lines, increased automation, and innovative technologies. A key component of this initiative is the renovation of the paint shop, which will become one of the most modern in the automotive industry by 2025. The commencement of the Audi A5 production in Neckarsulm represents the largest start-up phase in the plant's history. Board Member for Production Gerd Walker attributes this success to the team's extensive experience in vehicle production and complex ramp-ups. Plant Manager Fred Schulze emphasizes the workforce's additional training in new systems and automotive production technologies, ensuring a future-proof production infrastructure. Rainer Schirmer, Chairman of the Works Council at Audi Neckarsulm, also highlights the employees' ability to handle complexity and their flexibility as key factors in the site's contribution to the success of the Audi A5. Audi's vision for future production involves modernizing, digitalizing, and transforming its plants for sustainable manufacturing. The renovated paint shop will feature numerous optimized processes and environmentally friendly procedures. For example, the introduction of a new painting process eliminates the need for separate drying of the filler, saving up to 140 kilowatt-hours per vehicle. The use of sustainable water-based paints and a new dry separation process for paint mist further reduce energy consumption and eliminate the need for fresh water and chemicals. Audi's commitment to sustainable water use is evident in its goal to halve ecologically weighted water consumption in production by 2035. A closed water cycle, utilizing the Unteres Sulmtal Wastewater Association's treatment plant, will save up to 70 percent of fresh water from 2025.
