In 2025, the UCI planned to test a maximum gear ratio limit at the Tour of Guangxi. The idea came from SafeR, cycling's joint safety body backed by riders, teams, organisers and the UCI. A majority of riders supported it. All four stakeholders had agreed to it. SRAM even sent mechanics to UCI headquarters to help plan it. Then, weeks before the race, SRAM took the UCI to court and won a temporary suspension of the test through the Belgian Competition Authority. Now the UCI is appealing. And it plans to fund that fight using €300,000 from the SafeR budget. The same budget that SRAM-sponsored teams contribute to.
