The James Webb Space Telescope launched in December twenty twenty one. It began science operations in July twenty twenty two. The telescope was designed with one primary goal: see the first galaxies and stars that formed after the Big Bang. To peer back thirteen billion years and watch cosmic dawn unfold. To answer fundamental questions about how the universe transitioned from a dark void of hydrogen and helium to a cosmos filled with stars and galaxies. Webb found them. The first galaxies. The earliest stars. But they're all wrong. "It looks nothing like what we predicted," said Rohan Naidu, the lead author of one discovery study. The galaxies are forming too fast. They're too big. Too bright. Too early. Too chemically enriched. Every prediction has been violated. "There is a growing chasm between theory and observation related to the early universe," researchers noted. This wasn't supposed to happen. We built the telescope to confirm our theories about cosmic dawn. Instead, it's demolishing them.
