Janis and I had the opportunity to fly/demo a Kodiak 100 Series II, which was provided by American Kodiak. 1st time flying anything bigger than a 182, much less a turboprop! They told us, if you can fly a Cessna 182, you can fly the Kodiak... As a low time pilot (184.9 PIC hours), I'm about to put that theory to the test! There is enough similarities between the two (182/Kodiak), that the transition should be relatively painless. There is also enough differences between the two, that you'll need a several hours with an experienced Kodiak/Mentor Pilot. I have experience with a G1000, but the G1000Nxi still has a few nuances to learn as well. Obviously, starting a turboprop is significantly different than a piston. But once you get the hang of it, it's EASIER and WAY COOLER! The amount of power on takeoff, really took me by surprise. Similarly to when I transitioned from a 172 / 182 (180hp / 230hp), except the power delta between the 182 / Kodiak (230hp / 750hp) was over 3 times the power increase! Rotation, Approach, Flap speeds, etc. are very similar to a 182. The main differences that I "felt" besides the obvious power, was the feel of the controls, initially I thought they were Heavy/Firm, after a while I got used to them and realized that the controls were simply; Precise/Responsive somewhat like comparing a sedan to a sports car, the control inputs are very linear. I simply had become accustomed to Looser control inputs. I LIKE IT!!! Another neat feature is the; Auto Flap/Trim Compensation, Michael mentioned several times during our flight about "Auto Trim", but it didn't register at first, then I realized you don't have to compensate for the "Ballooning" when you add flaps, it automatically compensates when the airspeed is above 35kts-TOO COOL!!!! Once you get past the initial transitional differences, this plane is an absolute joy to fly!
