Athabasca is situated in northern Alberta, Canada, 145 km north of Edmonton, at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 55, along the banks of the Athabasca River. It serves as the center of Athabasca County. Formerly known as Athabasca Landing, it was a significant freighting departure point during the Klondike era. Athabasca was incorporated as a town in 1911 and officially adopted its current name in 1913, following the arrival of the Canadian National Railway in 1912. The Town of Athabasca is the contemporary gateway to the new north country.
