In a condition that has for so long been mainly considered through the lens of children, autistic romantic relationships are rarely discussed. This leads both autistic people and their partners (neurotypical or otherwise) to face struggles in their relationships around anything from communication to sex that they have not previously considered, let alone been specifically prepared for. In this webinar we will explore how autistic people might experience relationships, what problems the relationship might face and how all partners involved can support each other. We are joined by guest speaker Dr Tiga-Rose Nercessian, an accredited psychosexual and relationship psychotherapist. 0:00 Intro 1:59 Typical neurodivergent strengths and difficulties 3:54 Why do relationships matter so much? 6:38 Sensory sensitivities and intimacy 13:45 Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and dating 16:00 Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria and Dating 19:31 Alexithymia and emotions 24:55 Relationship OCD 31:20 Autism and gender 34:44 Autism and non-traditional relationships 40:30 You are worthy of healthy, loving relationships 45:12 Is counselling necessary for dealing with these issues around sensitivity or can it be resolved between partners? 46:20 Suggestions for things to do with your partner for intimacy that don't include penetrative sex 48:31 Interpreting language in terms of flirting 50:45 Suggestions for people building up confidence when entering or re-entering the dating scene 52:48 How do I find people like me? 55:10 People say I'm intimidating or unapproachable: how can I appear more approachable? 57:45 It's common for autistic people to receive medication which may affect libido: is there any advice for maintaining this through relationships? 1:00:03 What is the difference between friendliness and romantic interest? 1:02:10 How can I access psychosexual therapy?
