After following these directions get off the ground and a safe distance from the ground in your chosen airplane, activate the main autopilot switch, and then activate the NAV hold feature on the autopilot. (But make sure the NAV hold is set to navigate based on the GPS, not VORs. My experience is that GPS is the default, at least in the Cessna 172 Skylane with Garmin 1000 avionics.)
