Atlanta Falcon sculpture diary / Chapter IV: THE FALCON TAKES TO THE SKIES

On-site at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, we first had to take shelter in the basement because of the coming tornado. Then following my blueprints for the sculpture, we started the final installation. The football was placed onto the pedestal, the talons of the falcon grasped the ball, the body was hoisted onto the legs, and the wings were welded to the body. As a finishing touch, the parts of the skeleton, which could still be seen, were masked with smaller feathers. It was cathartic to see two years of hard work coming together into a single sculpture. Curious Atlanta Falcons fans were observing the construction in awe. It was beautiful how the glass walls of the stadium reflected the bird of prey in the radiant sunshine. Happiness doesn't even begin to describe the feeling I felt when my team and I could finally sit down on the pedestal under the falcon's wings to enjoy the toils of our efforts.
