Guidance is provided for students to help them make good choices when considering university. The guest speakers for this event are Jack Costerton, the Outreach and Student Recruitment Officer (Sport and Education) at the University of Gloucestershire and Dr Dan Gordon, the Principal Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin university. Session 1 - Why study sport? Jack speaks about the opportunities and job prospects available to students who graduate with a sports degree. There are over 1,000 courses you can choose to study at university in the UK and around the world. There are a range of subjects on offer, explains Jack, such as sports mathematics, sports counselling, therapy, sports journalism and international sports development. He goes on to speak about what you should look for when deciding which university is best for you such as facilities and equipment, staff expertise and placements. He shares tips for how to make the most of virtual open days and how to speak to academics about the course you are interested in. Jack touches on the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) as a governing body for university sport and how you can get involved. Finally, he speaks about scholarships offered by universities as well as external bodies and ends with tips on how to support your application. Session 2 - Sport and exercise sciences: what does the future hold? Dan explains what sport and exercise sciences are and who these types of courses are suitable for. He looks at the employment rates for sport science graduates and data which shows what sectors graduates go into. With every course at university you learn transferable skills and this programme is no different. Dan highlights the skills you are able to develop which are valued by employers after you graduate. He speaks about what you will study on the course, the three main areas being exercise physiology, biomechanics and psychology. Dan goes into the specifics of each area and what topics you will cover. He also touches on inter-disciplinary modules on offer such as nutrition, history of sport and coaching and how to find out what modules are available at your chosen university. Finally, he speaks about careers that graduates have gone into, further study options and teacher training.
