The terrain of the route was a combination of hill, woodland and field paths and tracks plus road sections. The walking included some easy level ground but was mostly gradual undulating ground with three moderate ascents and descents. Route finding was generally easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. However, due to the many twists and turns along the route, map-reading skills would be advisable. There were 9 stiles to negotiate. Along the walk you visit: Wooler, St Cuthbert's Way, Kenterdale Hill and Wooler Common; Hart Heugh summit, Switcherdown and Wooler Common again; Humbleton Burn, Brown's Law summit and Humbleton. Scenery includes: woodland and rolling hills, some gorse and tufted grass covered; Bronze Age burial cairn-topped Hart Heugh with superb views to Cheviot heartland and Harthope Valley; a variety of building and dwellings in Wooler town with its church, the hamlet of Humbleton, Earlehillhead farm, Wooler Common Cottage and building remnants of long-deserted Switcherdown; plus dry-stone walls. You may also encounter sheep in fields and on the hills. I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a Northumberland walking holiday during December 2018. We drove from our holiday accommodation in Glanton, Northumberland to the starting location of Wooler, Northumberland. We parked in The Cheviot Centre car park, Padgepool Place, Wooler, at grid reference NT 989 281, which was also the start location of the walk. What gear is on your hiking backpacking checklist?
