In a landmark judgment delivered on 16 February 2026, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Gangavathi sentenced three men—Mallesh (alias Handimalla), Sai (alias Chaitanya Sai), and Sharanappa (alias Sharanabasavaraj)—to death for the brutal gang rape of an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay owner, and the murder of a tourist from Odisha. The crime occurred on 6 March 2025, near the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal near Hampi, where a group of five tourists was attacked while stargazing. The assailants pushed three male tourists into the canal, resulting in the drowning death of Bibhash Kumar Nayak, before sexually assaulting and robbing the two women. Categorising the act as "rarest of rare" due to its extreme brutality, Judge Sadananda Nagappa Naik awarded capital punishment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) just 11 months after the incident.
