Instagram / travel__backpacker ------------------------------------------------------- A very ancient and famous Ramtek Fort-Temple. Shri Ram Temple known by various names such as Ram Mandir, Ram Dham and Ramtek Fort Temple is located on the Ramgiri Hill at Ramtek, about 50kms northeast of Nagpur. This historical temple, constructed top the hill at an elevation of 345 metres from land is believed to be more than 600 years old and is dedicated to Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana. At the foot of Ram Temple, there is a big tank, Ambala talab which is used for Pitru Pooja (i.e immersing the ashes of the dead). The main attraction of the Ram temple is the celebrations and religious activities held here on the auspicious occasion of Ramnavmi and Tipuri Pornima. Besides Ram temple, 27 Brahmanical style temples can also be found on the hill. The legend says that Lord Rama stopped at Ramtek, along with His wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, while on his exile. Another fact that adds to the attraction of the town, from tourism point of view, is its association with the Great poet Kalidasa. He wrote his excellent poem, Meghdoot in the hills of Ramtek only. Infact, it is often said that it was the beauty of Ramtek Hills that inspired him to write the poem. The present temple is believed to have been built by the King of Nagpur Raghuji Bhonsale, after his victory over fort of Deogarh in Chindwara. ------------------------------------------------------- For any query contact me on my Gmail - [email protected]
