More than 40 years after a bamboo bridge was destroyed, three barangays in the town of Ibaan, Batangas are finally reconnected with the opening of a new bridge. The state-of-the-art Catandala Bridge, costing ₱270 million, was inaugurated last Thursday. According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Batangas 4th District Engineering Office, the bridge spans 121 meters in length, 13 meters in width, and stands 24 meters above the Calumpang River. The bridge is equipped with sidewalks, guardrails, wheel guards, and a viewing deck. Construction of the Catandala Bridge, which began in 2022, was the government’s response to the long-standing appeal of residents from Barangays Catandala, Mabalor, and Panghayaan. According to Barangay Catandala Chairman Jose De Torres, the old bamboo bridge was never replaced after it was destroyed by a massive flood decades ago. With the completion of the state-of-the-art bridge, transportation will now be faster and safer for delivering goods, going to town, attending school, and for the residents’ daily activities. The bridge will also benefit travelers going to the nearby towns of Taysan and Lobo, both of which have become popular tourist destinations. The bridge took three years to complete, according to 4th District Representative Lianda Bolilia. “This is the largest and most ambitious bridge ever built in the 4th District. Out of the 42 bridges we’ve constructed, this is the most expensive and the grandest,” said Rep. Bolilia. The bridge is also expected to become a tourist attraction because of the scenic views it offers while crossing.
