Exactly one year ago was the Philippine premiere of Maestro Chino Toledo's “Hoy! Bata…” for soprano and orchestra, performed (and in this video, introduced) by soprano Bianca Lopez-Aguila with the UP Symphony Orchestra. “Hoy! Bata…” is a derivative work that utilized materials from different Philippine children’s songs - for children and by children. It tries to evoke the different feelings, emotions and needs of these children. From the playful, nonsense words, onomatopoetic game song “Bagbagto” of the young Igorots from the Cordillera region, to the Visayan lullaby “Ili-Ili-Tulog Anay" with its swaying lyricism, going to the rhythmic and assuring “Sa Duyan" song of the Tausug in Mindanao, and ending with the energetic and imaginative “Tong Tong Tong Tong Pakitong Kitong" a song from the Tagalog region. The dialogue between the soloist and orchestra tries to capture the spirit of all these songs. The work was originally premiered in the “Weaving Asian Into Music” concert in 2017 at Tokyu Bunkamura Hall in Tokyo, also with soprano Bianca Lopez-Aguila. Enjoy! "Hoy! Bata..." was performed at "Of Heights and Bliss" last May 18, 2019 at the Abelardo Hall, UP College of Music. Erratum: Name on video should read complete "Josefino Chino Toledo" instead of just Josefino Chino. Find us on: / upsymphonyorch / upsymphonyorch / upsymphonyorch
