Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants - Noel Gallagher (1999)

IN ANOTHER LIFE… In early 1999 Oasis returned to the studio to record their fourth album. The sessions quickly became miserable with Noel’s “No drink or drug” policy driving the band apart. The band split into two camps, Noel’s side, and Paul Arthur’s (Bonehead). With Bonehead’s departure almost imminent, Noel discovered that Liam was also sneaking drugs into the studio, who Noel assumed to be on his side. Tensions mounted until Liam broke two ribs in May of 1999 stalling the recording of the album by another month. Where this situation might’ve ended up in a large argument and bust up a few years prior, Noel instead began to quietly work on a solo record, and reduced his effort and contributions towards the work of the band. The sessions became increasingly unproductive, until in September of 1999, when Liam Gallagher went missing, without telling Noel, or his wife where he had gone. The band were due to play a promotional gig the following evening; When neither Liam, Paul or Guigsy showed up, it confirmed to Noel that continuing Oasis was no longer a viable option, at least for now. The following day Noel Gallagher announced to the press that he would be dissolving the band Oasis, and leaving the group with immediate effect. The following week, Noel rushed to release his first solo single, “Go Let It Out” backed with “Let’s All Make Believe”. The single was met with mixed feelings from critics and fans, however received considerable praise from hip music magazine “Pitchfork”, stating “Noel has done the best thing he could in ditching his rude, talentless ape of a brother. There’s a charming vulnerability here, something you could never imagine from the merry band of arseholes he hung around before. We’re excited to see what he has to offer now the chains are off.” If Noel’s hope was to scare Liam into taking the band and his public image more seriously, the opposite happened. Liam went into full on breakdown, saying he’d kill Noel on live television, temporarily splitting with wife Patsy Kensit and punching a fan outside his home. The tabloid media narrative quickly turned into pro-Noel and anti-Liam. This hostile environment continued to grow until Noel finally released his first solo album on the 22nd November 1999. The album was met with critical acclaim, gareneing many comparisons to a modern day “McCartney 1” in its homemade feel, and with Noel playing nearly every instrument on the album. It heavily divided Oasis fans, just as the fan base had already been split into two sides, with the biggest complaint being the lack of Oasis-esque songs (Something the reviewers loved). Noel’s risk however was not without reward, the album went straight to Number 1 in the UK, and received considerable radio play in the States, with “Where Did It All Go Wrong” reaching number 3 on the Billboard Alternative Charts. 1.
