LSBU is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting the prestigious 2024 IMechE Design Challenge Greater London Regional Finals Competition! Organized by Elisa Puccinelli, Mechanical Engineering and Design Lecturer at LSBU and Chair of the GLR IMechE Design Challenge. When is the event happening? The competition will take place at the LSBU Hub - Exhibition space from 10 am to 5 pm on both April 22nd and 23rd. Additionally, the event will be live-streamed on IMechE YouTube channels. What is the IMechE Design Challenge? The IMechE Design Challenge is an annual competition organized by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It offers university students a hands-on engineering experience, where they design, create, present, and operate a device according to specific technical guidelines. This challenge enables students to develop practical skills, gain industry experience, and enhance interpersonal abilities within a set timeframe. It serves as a valuable addition to academic studies or as an extracurricular pursuit. This year's project brief: Participants are tasked with building a repeatable vehicle that can be any movable device—wheeled, walking, sliding, jumping, rolling, or other. The device must move from a point on a flat surface to touch a wall placed at right angles to the point and then return to stop as close as possible to the starting point. The construction of the device can utilize any method of propulsion, limited only by cost and size considerations. Who will be competing? Teams from various London universities, including our very own LSBU student teams, will be participating in different challenge categories: Concept Challenge: Virtual project only - no physical prototype. Foundation Challenge: Device without any programmable element, based only on mechanical and passive systems, with analog-type electric-electronic architecture. Advanced Challenge: Device with programmable elements. Join us in supporting our LSBU teams as they showcase their incredible skills and creativity in this exciting competition!
