Thank the stars that Lava Piranha does not get the extreme fiery attribute that Nuclear Guy possesses... CantWin is a File Code in Dark Star Edition that sets you to level 27, gives you all 128 badges, and the 5 unlockable stones immediately (all but Greed, Badge, and Rainbow). However, in return, it forces all encounters to be at least 4.5x difficulty, the equivalent of Super + Mega Curse. Equipping Curse badges does NOT stack with this multiplier, but if you equip Ultra + Mega Curse or all 3 Curses, you will do a fight on that respective difficulty instead of the innate 4.5x difficulty that CantWin forces. Lava Piranha EX has 90 Base HP, scaling up to 405, and has 0 Base Defense. The Lava Buds have 16 Base HP, scaling up to 72, and have 0 Defense. As is known though, Lava Piranha is a 2-phase fight, where all enemies become fiery against attacks that make direct contact in Phase 2. This effectively means that we double Lava Piranha's Base HP to 180, giving 810 in total. The Petit Piranhas that the Lava Buds spawn in Phase 2 have 6 Base HP, scaling up to 27, and have 0 Defense. I noted that Lava Piranha has 0 BASE Defense, not just 0 Defense. The reason for this is because it gets +2 Defense for each Lava Bud that's active, just like in its Chapter 5 fight. Lava Piranha also receives HP Recovery as well, just like in its Chapter 5 fight. Whereas the recovery was only 2 for each Lava Bud in Chapter 5 though, here the recovery is now 8. This means that Lava Piranha will recover 16 HP if both Lava Buds are active and able to move. This recovery does NOT scale up with Curses. Further changes were added to the Lava Buds in this fight. If you stun them, they can still attack in both Phases. In addition, during Phase 2, while they still spawn Petit Piranhas, the Lava Buds themselves can also attack in the same turn they do so. However, they still won't act on the following turn after doing so. As such, there are more attack stats to look at in this fight than we had in Chapter 5. They are as follows: Lava Buds, Phase 1, Fireballs: 10 (45) Lava Buds, Phase 1, Stunned Lava Shot: 6 (27) Lava Piranha, Phase 1: 10 (45) Lava Buds, Phase 2, Lava Shot: 6; used the same turn after spawning a Petit Piranha (27) Lava Buds, Phase 2, Stunned Steam Shot: 7 (31) Lava Piranha, Phase 2: 8+8 (36+36); this also hits the partner with a base damage of 1 (4), but only if it's also able to hit Mario. If this attack hits, it drops Mario's Defense by 3 and the partner's Defense by 2. Petit Piranhas, Phase 2: 15 (67) It should come as no surprise that the Mega Bounce Exploit is the only way to reasonably solve this fight. This will actually end up being the case for all of the remaining EX Bosses because you need the extreme damage for one purpose or another. For the case of this specific fight, it should also not be a surprise that Perfect Peril is the only real way you will successfully get through. A standard build would have to be able to survive 3-4 strikes every turn, which is far too absurd with how strong enemies get at this point. With that said, while the Mega Bounce Exploit is needed for dealing with Lava Piranha itself, we still want Quake Jump as well for Phase 1 of this fight. Although the Mega Bounce Exploit can outpace Piranha's regen, the fact that we can only attack every 2 turns effectively means that it recovers 32 HP before we can damage it again. That is very powerful regen, and I find it better to take that out of the equation so that things are more manageable. The Badge and Item build, as well as the strategy, are all the same from the 3x clear. The Mega Bounce Exploit is the only difference, and that allows us to break through on this difficulty. One thing I did learn while going for this fight is that the Mini Soda does have a slightly better synergy with P-Up D-Down when compared to the Boo Leaf. For some reason (I don't know why), even if you have the Dark Cake boost active, the Boo Leaf will still damage you if you have P-Up D-Down equipped. This does not apply if you use Repel Gel into Mini Soda instead. Note that the Mini Soda will normally damage you if you have P-Up D-Down equipped, even through invis. But for whatever reason that doesn't happen with the Dark Cake's boost. So yes, the Mini Soda is the better item here.
