I'll try to figure those things out and add them as time goes by. Or if one of our resident experts wants to chime in that would be great. Excerpt from The Rolling Stones A Life On The Road. Interviews conducted by Jools Holland and Dora Lowenstein. Pub. 1998. An official Stones publication. Edited by Flip. CHARLIE WATTS: It was quite difficult finding a guitar player to take Mick’s place, and I don’t think we ever found as musical a guitar player, but then I liked that type of playing. Ronnie is a very, very good person to have with you, and Keith prefers to play with someone like Ronnie. Ronnie’s a very lovable guy. So was Mick Taylor, but he’s a moodier person, a bit serious. Musically, though, Mick brought a whole other level of playing to this band. In the period he was with us I think he played beautifully. We gave him platforms to play on: he’d only do them once or twice and that was it. Usually his first go was perfect. They were really wonderful - ‘Waiting On A Friend’, things like that - he had a way of making a twist to them. I never saw the reason why Mick left. Probably he was fed up or something. There were probably other reasons he left which I don’t know about. But he wanted to leave to make his own records. I thought ‘Well, this will be incredible. He’s going to go from here to there’. I thought he’d be like a Pat Metheny (jazz/rock guitarist) or something. And it didn’t happen. Nothing happened when he left us. I think we chose the right man for the job at that time just as Ronnie was the right man for the job later on. I still think Mick is great. I haven’t heard or seen him play in a few years, but certainly what came out of playing with him are musically some of the best things we’ve ever done. Excerpt from Bill Wyman’s book Stone Alone The Story Of A Rock ‘N’ Roll Band. Pub. 1990 Edited by Flip. The decision on Brian’s successor was dealt with before his departure was finalized. Stu [Ian Stewart], who understood the chemistry of the group, recommended Mick Taylor, a stalwart guitarist with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Mick had been only fourteen, and a year away from leaving school, when we had our first small hit with “Come On,” but his pedigree since as a blues-based musician was exemplary; it was known that anyone [like Eric Clapton] who came through the Mayall band had strong roots. Mick Jagger phoned Mick Taylor on Stu’s advice and invited him to come to our recording session at the Olympic on May 30. Taylor sat in with us for the first time and his empathy was clear; he was a superb natural player. His arrival coincided with the recording of one of our finest tracks, “Honky Tonk Women.” Mick Taylor seemed custom-built for the Stones. Yet there were some similarities with Brian [Jones]: he was shy, sensitive and bluesy. “When I was with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers I was playing the blues. I’d always been writing music but it wasn’t the kind of music the group could use. Now I can write numbers that will have a better chance of being used. Since I am a lead guitarist, both Keith and I will be playing lead more or less. A rhythm guitarist is expendable; you don’t really need one, so in effect there will be two leads.” Jagger said: “I’d never heard him live, only on records. He’d been through the John Mayall school of guitarists, people like Peter Green and Eric Clapton. I didn’t want to go through the whole bit of auditioning guitarists so I spoke to John Mayall, a man whose judgement I respect in these matters. John just grunted when I told him we’d like to see Mick Taylor, so I took it as a yes.”
