PLASTIC SURGERY TUTORIAL: Dr. Samuel Lam, facial plastic surgeon, reviews the details of otoplasty (cosmetic ear pinning) as part of his facial plastic surgery tutorial series. Otoplasty is a quick, simple procedure performed under twilight anesthesia for your comfort with very minimal recovery time. The two types of cosmetic otoplasty include correction of a lop ear deformity (absence of a antihelical fold) and correction of a cup ear deformity (protuberant conchal bowl). Protuberant ears can be a devastating aesthetic deformity, especially for the maturing child subject to the ridicule of his or her peers. A simple and straightforward procedure, known in medical lingo as otoplasty, can return the ears to their natural orientation and configuration. Two principal pathologies may exist in isolation or in combination. A "lop-ear deformity" refers to the absence of an ear-cartilage fold known as the antihelix (the smaller curved, inner ridge of the ear that parallels the outer curve of the ear.) This type of deformity presents as an abnormally shaped ear that tends to flop forward. Alternatively, a "cup-ear deformity" refers to the exuberant cup-like cartilage bowl that resides near the actual ear canal that in turn makes the ear project out excessively. Surgery involves identifying the exact cosmetic problem and intervening in a targeted approach and on a timely basis. Oftentimes, ear surgery may be covered by insurance if done prior to adolescence. Dr. Lam is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has authored three major facial plastic surgery textbooks, including Comprehensive Facial Rejuvenation: A Practical and Systematic Guide to the Aging Face, Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face, and the recently published Complementary Fat Grafting. Dr. Lam has also published over 100 book chapters and scientific articles on the subject of facial plastic surgery and lectures nationally almost on a monthly basis on facial plastic surgery.
