If you’ve ever wondered how to prep a wide brim hat for laser engraving, here’s the simple jig setup I use in my shop. I start with a 12x18 piece of basswood and cut an oval opening in the center that’s 8.5 inches wide by 7 inches. Then I invert the hat and place the crown down into the oval cutout, which keeps the hat positioned correctly for engraving. To keep everything level inside the laser, I set the jig on four small metal camping cups. This raises the jig and allows the hat to sit flat while engraving. I also use a lot of tape to make sure nothing shifts during the job: • Double-sided tape to secure the hat to the jig • Press & Seal wrap over the hat for extra stability Pro tip: Don’t throw away the oval piece you cut out! I place that piece on top of the hat while it’s engraving to help protect the rest of the hat from stray laser marks. This method is simple, inexpensive, and works great for engraving wide brim hats, cowboy hats, and felt hats. ✨ I also sell laser-ready hat engraving designs on my Etsy shop!
