In this study 'Unravelling Dutch Euthanasia' Fransien van ter Beek uses recent data including the fourth scientific evaluation of the euthanasia law (2023) and the annual reports of the regional euthanasia review committees to demonstrate that Dutch safeguards work, even for those with dementia, age related disorders or psychological illness. The Netherlands is known for its progressive stance on medical aid in dying, but some worry about potential abuse and a slippery slope. This presentation dives into tightly regulated Dutch practices with each case undergoing careful review by local committees. This exploration of Dutch societal views on end-of-life care and through sharing insights of the Dutch system, aims to ease concerns and encourage discussions about euthanasia, ensuring a better grasp of patient rights and dignified end-of-life choices. EOLI wanted to include as many presenters of Scientific papers as possible to give a more rounded picture of the work and research being undertaken in the End of Life area. This is one of 9 papers presented at the conference, each of which had to be presented within 8 minutes with presenters continuing conversations with delegates afterwards. Anyone wishing to be connected with a presenter, please email [email protected]. Our thanks to Dr. Brendan O'Shea , Kildare based GP and member of Irish Doctors Supporting MAiD (www.maid.ie) who facilitated these sessions on both days of the conference.
