Mid of protesters in the yard of the holy shrine STORYLINE: Enraged crowds protested the hanging of Saddam Hussein across Iraq's Sunni heartland, as a mob in Samara broke the locks off a bomb-damaged Shiite shrine and marched through carrying a mock coffin and photo of the former Iraqi leader. Demonstrators took to the streets of Dor near Samara (120 kilometres, 75 miles north of Baghdad) in Iraq on Monday to protest against the execution of the deposed president. Defying curfews, gunmen with scarves masking their faces marched through the streets firing into the air, while women dressed in black chanted pro-Saddam slogans and called for revenge. One of the masked gunmen, who was not identified, offered his condolences to Muslims over the death of Saddam. "Mercy be upon him (Saddam)", he said. "And we also give our condolences to the brave Baathists (members of Saddam's political party) over the death of their leader Saddam, God is great." The demonstrators gathered for the dedication of a new nine-metre (30-foot) mural of Saddam built at a compound in the town. Dor, 77 miles north of Baghdad, is the hometown of Iraq's former vice-president General Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri. Ibrahim, Saddam's former deputy and now a fugitive with a 10 (m) million US dollar bounty on his head, has not been seen since the fall of Saddam's regime in April 2003. He is believed to be leading Baathists in the insurgency, which has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of US and Coalition troops. In Samara, north of Baghdad, protesters passed a symbolic coffin through the crowds and held prayers in the yard of the holy shrine of Imam Ali al-Hadi and Hassan al-Askri which were bombed on February 22, 2006. The February 22 bombing of the shrine triggered the current cycle of retaliatory attacks between Sunnis and Shiia, in the form of daily bombings, kidnappings and murders. The current Sunni protests, which appear to be building, could signal a spreading militancy, some observers said.
