Fr. Abel sings his Malayalam version of the Syriac chant Edtha Pus Lek, from the funeral services for priests in the Syro Malabar Church. Recorded on 20 Sep 1997 at Joseph J. Palackal's office in Maspeth, New York during Fr. Abel's visit to U. S. A. See full recording at Aramaic Project-14 • Aramaic Project-14. On rhythm in Syriac ch... Note: During the Kalabhavan Entertainment tour in the USA, Fr. Abel took time off to visit me at my parish rectory in Maspeth, New York. I was in the process of preparing my dissertation proposal. I had already decided to use the Malayalam version of the Syriac melodies for my dissertation. Fr. Abel's visit gave me the opportunity to record a few melodies in his voice. This happened in my office room in the rectory. During the recording, we also entered into a conversation on the rhythmic aspects of some of the chants. In retrospect, that conversation was very useful in documenting our different opinions on the topic. Recently, I revisited this video while preparing for a webinar on Zoom that Dharmaram Vidyakshethram organized on 12 March 2021. Currently, I am writing an article, Fr. Abel Periyappuram, CMI: Creator of a New Syriac Music Genre in Malayalam, for Dharmaram Publications. Reference: Aramaic Project 14 • Aramaic Project-14. On rhythm in Syriac ch... Joseph J.
