Their homes are small, warm, and built for pure survival—spaces where the entire family cooks, eats, and sleeps in one room, relying on each other and the heat from a clay stove to endure temperatures below –20°C. Throughout my stay, I witnessed traditions that challenged everything I knew. I saw how reindeer skins are smoked for waterproofing, how boots require a month of hand-sewing, and how families move across the tundra depending on the season. But nothing prepared me for the rituals. Inside a leather-covered chum tent, I watched a reindeer sacrifice performed according to ancient belief systems older than Christianity. Men and women stood separated, each following strict rules that had been preserved for generations. After the ritual, a raw meal was served—fresh meat, liver, and brain prepared on the floor in complete silence. For the family, this was sacred. For me, it was one of the most difficult cultural moments I have ever faced, yet refusing would have been deeply disrespectful. What followed was a night spent in the tent at freezing temperatures, experiencing firsthand how entire families once lived for decades.
