The group consisted of inexperienced hikers and professional guides. Along the way, a tragic accident happened, leaving the entire Elbrus community in shock. Despite attempts to descend, the climbers lost their way, slipped and were unable to secure their ice axes. The tragedy made international news and raised questions about the safety of climbing the Elbrus.
