Small Business Ombudsman Kate Carnell says Australia's award system is so complex that companies can find it difficult not to end up in an "absolute debacle" by underpaying their employees. On Tuesday, Coles CEO Steven Cain apologised after the retailer revealed it underpaid between 500 to 600 staff over a six-year period. The supermarket giant admitted to underpaying workers by $20 million, with Attorney-General Christian Porter warning the company needs to "get their house in order". 'We have a very, very complex [award] system ... this system is more complex than any other system in the world," Ms Carnell told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. "What we need is appropriate public policy in this space ... let’s make it easy to pay people properly and then they will be paid properly, it’s that simple". Image: News Corp Australia
