Benchmark recently completed a Cracker Placer project in which 12 receiver cups were positioned in a 2x6 grid and loaded (2) cups in a 6-high or 8-high vertical stack. This system accepted 6-cell trays of on-edge product, hand placed into a semi-automatic tray unloader. Operators unloaded the trays into a 6-lane vibratory conveyor that fed a Vertical Stack Loading Head. The Cracker Placer fed (12) receiver cups, provided by the customer, positioned in a 2 x 6 grid each cycle. Product from each of (6) lanes was loaded into (2) cups in a 6-high or 8-high vertical stack. The loading head consisted of (6) shuttle plates each with (2) openings mounted directly above the customer’s receiver cups. After each index on the receiver cups, the loading head completed (6) or (8) cycles to load (12) accumulation cups. The loading head began each cycle with one compartment directly below each chute elbow. When the servomotor extended, the loading head stripped a 2-high stack of crackers from each of the (6) chute elbows and transferred them to the accumulation cups positioned below. At the extended position, the other compartment on the loading head was positioned below the chute elbow to accept an additional 2-high stack of crackers. When the servomotor retracted, a 2-high stack of crackers was transferred into the adjacent accumulation cups. After (6) or (8) complete cycles, all (12) accumulation cups will have received a 6-high or 8-high stack of crackers. The loading head will have paused until a signal was received from the customer’s receiver cups indicating that it was in the dwell portion of the cycle. When signaled, a common bar attached to each accumulation cup pneumatically retracts to gravity transfer the stacks of crackers into the receiver cups positioned below. This cycle repeats after each index of the customer’s tray conveyor.
