Today we talk about the construction of the ferries PRIDE OF DOVER and PRIDE OF CALAIS for Townsend Thoresen. In a previous podcast, we talked about the Spirit class - three Townsend Thoresen ferries built at the Schichau Unterweser shipyard (SUAG) in Bremerhaven, Germany in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Just five years later, the European Ferries Group, which marketed its services under the Townsend Thoresen name, commissioned a new set of ferries. These new ships were to be twice the size of the Spirit class and were nicknamed "Chunnel Beaters". This term referred to the new idea that emerged in 1984 to connect Great Britain and France with a fixed connection. A total of five plans were presented, each with different combinations of tunnels, dams, and suspension bridges - including the EuroRoute. However, the British and French governments ultimately opted for the privately financed construction and maintenance of the Eurotunnel. More in the video podcast!
