Kaizen is a Japanese term meaning continuous improvement that involves every member of an organization, from the CEO to the shop-floor workers. It is a business philosophy based on the belief that our working, social, and home lives should be the focus of constant improvement efforts. Unlike innovation, which typically involves dramatic, high-cost changes through new technology or large investments, kaizen focuses on incremental, subtle progress achieved through human effort and commonsense, low-cost approaches. It is highly process-oriented, operating under the principle that processes must be improved for results to improve. Key elements of a kaizen strategy include: Gemba-Focused: It prioritizes the gemba, or the "actual place" where value is created and the real action occurs. The Three Pillars: Successful practice in the gemba rests on housekeeping (5S), the elimination of muda (waste), and standardization. Problem-Solving Cycles: It utilizes the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to improve standards and the Standardize-Do-Check-Act (SDCA) cycle to maintain them. QCD Goal: The ultimate objective is to satisfy customers by simultaneously improving Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD).
