SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA presents: Grupo Nuu Yuku & Banda Brillo de San Miguel Cuevas Facing racial prejudice and extreme poverty in Mexico, hundreds of thousands of Mixtecs and other indigenous peoples from Oaxaca in Southern Mexico have been driven to find work outside their small villages that they have occupied continuously for centuries maintaining indigenous languages, knowledge systems and artistic expressions that have held their communities together. California is home to the largest number of indigenous immigrants from Oaxaca, who make up a major part of the 21st Century farm labor force. After a long day’s work in the fields facing extreme conditions and low wages, friends and families come together to practice traditional music, dance, foodways and other expressions that foster a sense of belonging and feeling of home. The Mixtec artists who practice the music and dance traditions of Los Diablos from the Juxtlahuaca District of Northern Oaxaca tell this story about the personal and cultural meanings of their traditional arts in OAXACALIFORNIA.
